Music City Hosts “Jumping for Vets”

Posted on May 23, 2022 by Danny Velez

When Music City Skydiving owners Danny and Kirstyn Velez, were approached by the We Are Building Lives Executive Director Jeff Upton about their upcoming benefit they instantly knew it was a cause they supported and wanted to be involved in. As a veteran owned drop zone, Music City graciously welcomed Jeff and his group for their “Jumping for Vets” benefit on May 21st, 2022.

Who is We Are Building Lives?

We Are Building Lives is a 501(c)(3) non-profit that is committed to assisting Nashville’s homeless veterans. With more than 20% of Nashville’s homeless population being honorably discharged military members, a group of local business leaders knew they needed to do something to help.

We Are Building Lives offers Veteran Assistance Programs which provide one-on-one mentoring, health and psychological care referrals, employment, transportation, & housing and financial education. In conjunction with these programs, they also own and operate The Academy. The Academy house is an all male facility, which houses 9 veterans and provides them opportunities necessary to transition from chronic homelessness to stable independent living. To date, they have helped 1000+ homeless veterans off the streets.

The Jump

With near perfect jump conditions, Executive Director Jeff,  Director of Operations Kevin Wilkinson and two of their friends, Ross Uchida and Nolan Wilson took to the blue skies and raised $14,000. The money raised will allow We Are Building Lives to be able to begin the process of opening a second Academy House for homeless female veterans. “There are only 7 beds for homeless female veterans in Middle Tennessee”, says Upton “Our hope is that the second house will double the Middle Tennessee capacity”. The goal is to have the second Academy House purchased towards the end of the year and operational shortly thereafter.

After the jumps were completed, with a smile on her face, Music City Skydiving Videographer Katie Albert said “I’m grateful I get to do what I love for a living, but jumping out of planes is much more meaningful when it’s to support a good cause like helping our veterans” and that same feeling was mutual across the entire staff, which are 99% military members either veterans or still active duty.

Tandem Instructors Danny Velez (red helmet) and Jason Collins (blue helmet) in conjunction with Videographer Katie Albert take the WABL group skydiving.

How Can You Help?

As a non-profit, We Are Building lives relies solely and heavily on the surrounding businesses and communities. If you would like to learn more about how you can help We Are Building Lives, you can find more information on how you can support or donate here.

MTSU near Nashville tandem skydives 2016

Middle Tennessee State University’s skydiving club held their annual Spring trip last Sunday, April 24th at Music City Skydiving near Nashville. After an attempt at the trip two weeks ago was weathered out with rain, clouds, and wind, the group was ready to get in the air. Club president, licensed skydiver, and regular at Music City Skydiving- Connor MTSU near Nashville tandem skydives 2016Sheppard led the charge for an early morning start Sunday. The group was favored with perfect weather and blue skies. After check in, the group members were quickly refreshed on training and started going up. Everything ran smooth and the group was completed very quickly. Some members even chose to dive in more unique attire than the average jumpsuit. MCS extends a big thanks to the MTSU, Connor, and the skydiving club. We look forward to the next trip hopefully in the fall when a brand new group of freshman skydivers discover the sky!

Raising the bar for Tennessee skydiving, Music City Skydiving opening weekend April 2nd

Raising the  bar for Tennessee Skydiving

Tennessee Skydiving- King Air and Facility at Music City SkydivingTennessee skydiving is getting some updates with MCS’s new site is up and running and our opening weekend upon us. We are still working to get the site up to 100% so if you find errors or misspellings please contact us and let us know. We will be posting to this blog regularly, so you can always come here to find out the latest from each weekend. Please send us pictures and video from each weekend. Your jumps, landings, anything from the DZ. We need it all and will post it here, You Tube, Facebook, and Instagram. Remember, it’s your content that makes things exciting!

Facility Updates

The first thing jumpers will notice is that we have completed a lot of work on the facility. As you will see first thing when you arrive, the manifest office has changed locations along with the video editing suite and Pro Shop. The Pro Shop is where manifest used to be. With a large window facing the lobby it will be much more conveniently located and visible to the customers as soon as they walk in. The manifest moved to the video editing suite to allow access to the video room only through manifest or the staff window. All of this will allow for a better work flow.

The King Air is finished with inspections , cleaned up, and will be ready for a full season of 8 minute rides to 14,000 feet! It has been busy all winter flying at our sister DZ, Skydive Atlanta ( www.skydiveatlanta.com) in Thomaston, GA.

We will post some pictures next week of the new work. See everyone this weekend!
