Music City Hosts “Jumping for Vets”

Posted on May 23, 2022 by Danny Velez

When Music City Skydiving owners Danny and Kirstyn Velez, were approached by the We Are Building Lives Executive Director Jeff Upton about their upcoming benefit they instantly knew it was a cause they supported and wanted to be involved in. As a veteran owned drop zone, Music City graciously welcomed Jeff and his group for their “Jumping for Vets” benefit on May 21st, 2022.

Who is We Are Building Lives?

We Are Building Lives is a 501(c)(3) non-profit that is committed to assisting Nashville’s homeless veterans. With more than 20% of Nashville’s homeless population being honorably discharged military members, a group of local business leaders knew they needed to do something to help.

We Are Building Lives offers Veteran Assistance Programs which provide one-on-one mentoring, health and psychological care referrals, employment, transportation, & housing and financial education. In conjunction with these programs, they also own and operate The Academy. The Academy house is an all male facility, which houses 9 veterans and provides them opportunities necessary to transition from chronic homelessness to stable independent living. To date, they have helped 1000+ homeless veterans off the streets.

The Jump

With near perfect jump conditions, Executive Director Jeff,  Director of Operations Kevin Wilkinson and two of their friends, Ross Uchida and Nolan Wilson took to the blue skies and raised $14,000. The money raised will allow We Are Building Lives to be able to begin the process of opening a second Academy House for homeless female veterans. “There are only 7 beds for homeless female veterans in Middle Tennessee”, says Upton “Our hope is that the second house will double the Middle Tennessee capacity”. The goal is to have the second Academy House purchased towards the end of the year and operational shortly thereafter.

After the jumps were completed, with a smile on her face, Music City Skydiving Videographer Katie Albert said “I’m grateful I get to do what I love for a living, but jumping out of planes is much more meaningful when it’s to support a good cause like helping our veterans” and that same feeling was mutual across the entire staff, which are 99% military members either veterans or still active duty.

Tandem Instructors Danny Velez (red helmet) and Jason Collins (blue helmet) in conjunction with Videographer Katie Albert take the WABL group skydiving.

How Can You Help?

As a non-profit, We Are Building lives relies solely and heavily on the surrounding businesses and communities. If you would like to learn more about how you can help We Are Building Lives, you can find more information on how you can support or donate here.

Music City Skydiving DZO's do high school demo jump

Posted on September 21, 2016 by Music City Skydiving

Friday September 2nd, MCS DZO’s Taylor Smith and Mike Looney treatedChannel 4 Helicopter Williamson County high school football fans to an memorable show, bringing the game ball onto the field in style via parachute.Using the Channel 4 news helicopter, the seasoned, PRO rated skydivers jumped into the football field from 5,000 feet. Taylor was first in with a perfectly executed 90 degree performance turn Game Ballto a slide in, stand up landing in style.  Mike, known better by Williamson County residents as “Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Looney,” followed with a 50 yard line stand up finish that would make the Golden Knights demo team jealous. Great job guys!

Just an hour from Nashville, Tennessee, Music City Skydiving is available for demo jumps into high schools and other functions.

Skydiving in Nashville covered by TV at MCS

Adventure travel TV show from covers skydiving in Nashville

Skydiving in Nashville, TV show interview
TV show interviews MCS manager Taylor Smith about tandem Skydiving in Tennessee

The show, Tennessee Crossroads, covers tourism and outdoor activities all around Tennessee. The visit from the show was arranged by Humphreys County Tourism Consultant, Karin Davis, who is working hard to highlight tourism activities in Humphreys County. Show producer, Taylor Walters, and her amazing crew arrived early and shot all around the DZ before the jump on the first load of the day. The morning had perfect weather and light winds. The host’s tandem jump went off without a hitch and left him grasping for words to describe his experience. Music City Skydiving DZ manager, Taylor Smith, was interviewed by the TV show after a jump with the host and several other show members/crew. The show is scheduled to air between November of this year and February of 2017.

The rest of MCS’s opening weekend was not quite as smooth with high winds preventing much jumping for most of Saturday, even causing an off site landing for most of one load. All the same, we had many of our regular faces back in the air over Waverly. It looks like it’s going to be a great season!

Music City Skydiving is Tennessee skydiving's newest and best facility. Looking for an outdoor bucket list item to check off? MCS is a short ride from Nashville, Clarksville, and Chattanooga.
